Is your stress response running the show?

Have you ever wondered why you feel “on edge” even when nothing major is happening?

That tight chest, that racing mind, the sudden irritability—these aren’t just quirks. They’re messages from your body’s internal alarm system, trying to protect you.

As a naturopath and holistic menopausehealth coach, I often see how women – especially in midlife – are living in a near-constant state of “fight or flight.” What used to be a short-term safety mechanism has now become a long-term health disruptor. And it’s exhausting.

Your stress response system is incredibly sophisticated. It’s designed to protect you by responding to real or perceived threats. But in our fast-paced world filled with deadlines, emotional labor, and hormonal shifts, this system can become overwhelmed—without you even realising it.

The Stress Response Cascade

It all begins in the amygdala, the part of your brain responsible for processing emotions. When a threat is detected, it sends signals to release cortisol and adrenaline, hormones that:

  • Increase heart rate and blood pressure

  • Sharpen focus and alertness

  • Suppress digestion and immune function

  • Redirect energy toward your muscles

While these reactions are essential in a crisis, chronic activation of this system can lead to serious health challenges:

  • Digestive problems and inflammation

  • Disrupted sleep patterns

  • Anxiety or mood swings

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Weakened immunity

You don’t have to live in survival mode. Once you understand your body’s internal alarms, you can break the cycle and regain balance.

Here’s how to complete the stress response cycle and signal to your body that it’s safe:

Simple and Effective Tools:

  • Move your body: Even a walk helps release built-up stress hormones.

  • Practice deep breathing: Inhale calm, exhale tension.

  • Connect with others: A warm chat releases oxytocin, your “calm” hormone.

  • Engage in creativity: Art, music, or journaling soothes the nervous system.

Your stress doesn’t have to define your life.
